I work for a "cancer research center" and I call it this only because that is in their actual name.

I have seen and read things that boggle the mind in the so-called treatment of folks over the years. The only explanation is that once the "C" word comes up, people become deaf and dumb to anything but how to rid themselves of this horrible plague.

Treatment is akin to using leaches...and worse...but at a far far far greater price. Walk in without insurance coverage and see how much "treatment" you get.

Cap out your existing coverage in the middle of treatment...and treatment ceases. Immediately. This is and probably always has been about money.

I keep telling people to stop giving money to the "cancer research" because no one is frigging looking for a cure (we have several and they have been carefully hidden away from public view)...this is a multi-billion dollar per year industry and a "cure" would put a lot of people out of work.

NO ONE is seriously looking for a cure...at least not "serious academics"...the fringe nut cases are but of course those are the people who went into medicine as a means to help humanity and not become richer than god by next Thursday so that is a completely separate issue.

I have worked in the medical field for over 20 years, most of which has been closely associated with cancer research and treatment...when I was personally diagnosed with breast cancer, about 7 years ago, I was living in Phoenix. So, of course, I was referred to CTC post haste. CTC has the state mandate to treat cancer patients, with or without insurance and to this end gets large sums of money from the state to treat indigents.

That does not happen. Indigents get turfed. Quickly. Also, at one point I became suspicious of some physicians at CTC and did my own research...I found Ph.D researchers doing hands on breast and pelvic exams...researchers with no clinical training or experience. Does that matter? Ask your wife or sister or mother if they mind if a non doctor researcher does that? Probably they will say yes.

There was also a very long list of physicians who were in the country (not as students) who had not passed medical boards as required for all practicing physicians. They had been practicing for years and had no medical license. There were American doctors who had not passed medical boards, i.e. were not licensed physicians who were also practicing at CTC...they were treating patients (NOT as a student with faculty overview, independently), they were dispensing drugs...if they are not licensed physicians they are also not licensed to dispense anything stronger than aspirin)...but they were writing prescriptions and ordering medications including chemotherapy medications for patients unsupervised.

There were even unlicensed physicians who were doing surgery. (not only at CTC either). Unlicensed physicians are also filing insurance claims and if they are not licensed, filing an insurance claim for services rendered is fraud of the highest magnitude. I did my research well and I had lists of names and dates and the newspaper blew me off and would not cover the story. The TV stations did likewise. CTC buys a lot of advertising time and no one was willing to rock the boat on those advertising dollars. What a shock.

Held hostage? YOU BET...and you have no idea the depth to which this extends. Personally, I chose to not have surgery, not have chemotherapy and not have radiation (what and lose my waist length hair? I do not think so!)...I used Essiac...to excellent response and still have all the associated body parts (and the hair).

CONCLUSION

When you talk about being held hostage by cancer, you need to back up to the original diagnosis. Do you...or most folks...have any means to know or understand a diagnosis that you are given?

NO? What a surprise. So...you are totally at the mercy of the hospital. When a doctor says cancer, you assume that he/she knows what they are talking about...a faulty assumption in some cases...and you assume that they know what is best to treat it...another faulty assumption.

The major industry that hospitals sell is not healing...it is education (or lack thereof) and blind faith in something you do not understand. This is true of lots of diagnoses besides cancer, it is just that cancer is the big money maker for most facilities...secondary to obesity which is coming up fast.

Hospitals are scary places for lots of reasons and mistakes are vastly more common than what you read or hear about. Everyone makes mistakes of course...doctors bury theirs...with the full knowledge and corporate cover up of the hospital administration. I can't wait to retire.

Reason 2: Peril to Wildlife

When something like the Deepwater Horizon incident goes down (pun intended), we're left with the decision of whether to help the marine life or the ecosystem of the fragile coastal marshland. Neither is a good decision. Neither is necessary if we simply don't create the potential for environmental disasters. The law of averages says shit happens!

Reason 3: Your Family's Bottom Line

I'm generally against using economics as an argument for or against doing the right thing when it comes to stewardship of the planet. In my view, it doesn't f'ing matter. What's right is right and damaging the ecosystem for the gain of a few - or even the many - is not right. Passing the damage on to the next generation for the benefit of the present is also just not right.

That said, not only do people respond to economic factors in environmental discourse but I personally believe that focusing on R & D can spur not only innovation but cash flow. I.E., the economy.

So here's a tidbit for you folks who are more concerned about your precious bottom line than your grandchildren's quality of life: This oil disaster could affect you! Don't think BP will pass the cost of this cleanup on to you? You're a fool. Don't think the rest of the oil industry will use BP's price hike as an excuse to hike their own prices? As if they're not already colluding. Don't believe it? You're only fooling yourself and they're gonna do it to you anyway.

Furthermore, this will disrupt shipping in the Gulf of Mexico for months. Imports and exports both. That's gonna raise prices on both. For you AND our trading partners. Which hurts America's economy since it will make it that much more enticing for other countries to get what little we DO export...from OTHER contries. More damage to the American job market.

Still thinking Drill, Baby, Drill? You're a fool.

Reason 4: History Repeats Itself

Remember the part above about how "shit happens"? Reminds me of a shirt I used to have that used the phrase to explain how different religions view the world. The reincarnation viewpoint was, "This shit happened before." There's another addage/axiom/idiom/what-have-you that applies here: History repeats itself.

If it happens once, it will happen again. I don't know if you're following this story at all. I mean it behooves you to, seeing how this affects all of us, but whatever. At any rate, you should know that there are supposed to be redundant systems to keep something like this from happening. I guess this is what happens when you allow AN INDUSTRY TO REGULATE ITSELF!

So guess what? The FINAL failsafe that FAILED in this case - the blowout preventer - is in question. This from the oil industry's own report. Oh - and they've known about it for at least 7 years.

They don't care. It would cost money to fix, so why should they fix it? Who's going to make them? They regulate themselves.

Conclusion

We, as a species, should stop offshore drilling. All of it. The risks are not worthwhile. What little petroleum we would need in a world that doesn't burn fossil fuels can be gained from old-fashioned ONshore drilling until we create innovative and eco-friendly new methods of manufacturing lubricants and plastics. We shouldn't have to decide between which ecosystem to attempt to save. We shouldn't continue to bet against the law of averages that says this will happen again.

We just shouldn't.

2010: Direct Action is Necessary for Change

These words from King apply to all change; all quests for human justice. In the search for an end to war and lasting peace. In the hunt for truth and transparency from our government. In the crusade to provide all our brothers and sisters with the basic right of health care. In the mission to preserve the natural ecology of this planet for future generations. In the race to end industry's exploitation of the environment, government, and every man, woman and child for the purpose of squeezing every last cent possible for the benefit of the ridiculously few.

Simply replace the word "negro" in King's letter from jail in Birmingham with your name or the name of the person you love most in this world. Replace "Ku Klux Klanner" with the name of your favorite boogey man, be it Osama or Obama. Because ultimately, your boogey man is given the power to do the things you believe they are doing because so-called "moderates", perhaps yourself among them, are just sitting around.

Because you're more concerned about who will win this year's American Idol. Because things aren't great for you, but you're not uncomfortable enough to do anything to change them. That'd be too hard.

But if you're like me...if you're on the cusp of being just uncomfortable enough to actually speak out; actually organize with your brothers and sisters and publicly demonstrate; actually get out and vote for people who represent your wishes and actually call them to demand they do so. If you're like me, join me. I challenge you to quit your bitching and actually take to the streets. Rally, but do so nonviolently.

I can pretty much guarantee 2010 will find me holding a sign on a street corner. At least once.

So here's my one resolution for the year: Take DIRECT action to change the world for the better. For EVERYONE. Not one group of people. Not one country. All humans.

The meat of the argument for more regulation of industry

Industry does not care about you. Industry is not concerned about your well-being. Industry does not worry about your family's safety. Sounds kinda like the first verse of "Head Like a Hole" by NIN, doesn't it? Well, you could replace every "Got Money" with the word "Industry", because they're one and the same. All industry wants is to bilk you for every cent it can.

That is all. That is everything they want. They want everything. They don't care what they have to do to get it. They don't care who is affected.

We need MORE government regulation of industry. Not less. Regulation is there to protect YOU. To protect me. More importantly, to protect my family.

Case in point: For the past 8 years (read: most of the Bush Administration), much of the ground beef you've consumed has had ammonia in it. Only, the people selling you the crap you were eating didn't have to tell you what they were putting in it.

I urge you to read as much of this expose by the New York Times as your stomach can handle.

Of course, this bastion of progressive journalism isn't alone in exposing ways the Assholes of Industry hide thier poisoning of the world for profit. The Washington Post recently did a piece on how 20% of the 84,000 chemicals available for commerical use in America are kept secret in order to protect industry's "trade secrets". You don't get to know what they are because someone might lose a buck. Nevermind being able to track how they affect the population.
